It's a complex problem where even less expensive projects also can be a big risk because they may also bring in less money and are less of a high profile game (and therefore have less marketing dollar behind them) to guarantee a certain level of success. There are certainly publishers that want to charge more while offering less than other competitors on the whole in terms of what they offer as a "full $60 game", but then we have cases where a consumer might not want to pay for extra content and maybe wants to pay less because they feel they are paying for stuff they don't want or maybe something like a base game sales helps develop extra content to even be able to sell or a multiplayer mode helps pay for a single player campaign to exist. Maybe you could argue that all clothing customization options don't take enough development time to justify charging extra and should be included as part of a "base $60 game", but how much is a mutliplayer map worth to a player versus how much time it takes to develop? What about for a fighter in a fighting game? What about new levels and weapons and campaigns? Clearly, there is a certain level of content that can agreed to be above and beyond what constitutes a "full $60 game" where, at least from a developer stand point, there is diminishing returns of how much time and money they put into developing content that doesn't equate to more sales or return on their investment.

As a a general rule of thumb, I agree with that sentiment, but AAA games are not structured like freemium games no matter how much of that model they have tacked on and comparing the two to essentially be the same as Jim has makes it seem like he doesn't see the difference in priorities of a mobile dev that just wants you to keep sinking in time and money playing the same game forever versus a core gaming franchise with more developed campaigns and objectives and systems.īesides, there is no set rule for how much content or gameplay hours or engagement represents a fair value for what constitutes a "$60 game".
